Gimme Your Money

What would a human smuggler say when he is pushing refugees into rotten vessels…? Gimme Your Money is my most cynical song yet, in lyrics and music.

“The captain is a one-armed dwarf”.  While cooking I was listening to Singapore by Tom Waits and somehow the word “captain” got my mind wandering, turning it into “No, a captain is so overrated”, as one of the cynical replies I imagine a human smuggler would answer in his defense.

This song to me is a typical B-side, like in the days singles had two sides (and the flip side often contained special or rare songs).

Gather on the shore with me tonight
Lower your voice & dim your lights
Your passage to freedom is here with me
Paradise is just across this Mediterranean Sea…
(gimme your money)

Tomorrow you’ll be free

Now give me your money
(gimme your money)

Now a captain is so overrated
You just follow this straight line
There is always room for one more aboard
This vessel will just be fine
(gimme your money)

Women, children, men
I will charge everyone equally
Mine is an offer you won’t refuse, you’ll find
Paradise in the sea…
(gimme your money)

No one will help
You but for me
Your trust is placed well
Tomorrow you’ll be free

Now give me your money
